SMALL PROJECTS

HOUSE BARRETT

Location: Torbet Street, Waverley. Bloemfontein
Project value: R1.5 M
Completion date: 2012

Nestled in between existing trees on a panhandle site, this addition to an existing prefab structure provides for additional bedrooms,a living space and a covered parking area for micro family in the Waverley suburb of Bloemfontein.
Keeping the existing trees was an unnegotiable design parameter determined by the clients which resulted in spatial transfigurations which are juxtaposed around tree positions on the site.
This made for interesting inside-outside spaces and views from the new structure by keeping the trees as integral part of the spatial transformation while the user circulates on the inside of the dwelling. A light steel frame methodology made for easy and rapid construction.

UFS TAXI TERMINUS

Location: University of the Free State. Bloemfontein
Project value: R3 M
Completion date: 2008

SAIA FS AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN ARCHITECTURE
Strategic planning to solve the growing numbers of vehicular traffic on the campus of the University of the Free State, included a taxi terminus at the DF Malherbe entrance gate.
The structure acts as an arrival and departure node, comprising of two roof elements that interlock to create a waiting pavilion surrounded by trees on the eastern side while addressing the vehicular access road and turning circle of the taxis, to the west.
The interplaying roof elements consist of a larger corrugated steel structure which diagonally moulds around a penetrative concrete roof slab. The corrugated iron roof terminates as a cantilevered overhang, providing protection for commuters upon arrival or departure.

HOUSE ERASMUS

Location: Kenilworth Smallholdings. Bloemfontein
Project value: R4 M
Completion date: 2016

This house evokes memories of a corrugated farmstead lifestyle in the eastern Free State, where the client grew up. The L- shape footprint of the house creates a courtyard which is resultant of the lay-out, and is protected from western sun and the main road which gives access to the property.
The corrugated gabled roof structure is adapted on the higher level to allow a roof window which floods the family room on the first level with natural sunlight during winter months. Generous roof over hangs, courtyard roof structures and a swimming pool, are a few of the energy control mechanism implemented in the design of the house.
Dark roof sheeting and plaster walls are contrasted with red face brick focus wall.

UFS VISITORS CENTRE

Location: University of the Free State. Bloemfontein
Project value: R3.5 M
Completion date: 2013

SAIA FS AWARD FOR ARCHITECTURE
The primary objective of this building is to form a legible and welcoming campus precinct at the entrance off D F Malherbe, now framed between the existing vehicular and pedestrian entrance gateways, the existing Taxi Terminus and the newly added Visitors Centre.
Clues were taken from the urban morphology and responds to crucial lines of movement on the site. The new Visitors Centre acknowledges lines of pedestrian movement and is informed by an extended axis, which sets up a spatial dialogue between the Taxi Rank, the Visitors Centre and the pedestrian gateway entrance, now connected by a clear line of movement.
The building showcases a robust, South African approach to construction using concrete, steel, face brick and corrugated iron.

MEDIUM PROJECTS

UFS SASOL LIBRARY SPATIAL REGENERATION

Location: University of the Free State. Bloemfontein
Project value: Phase 1 – R10 M
Completion date: 2012

The global argument pertaining to what the 21st century library should be is currently a hot debate. Locally, the UFS has taken the challenge head on with a spatial planning strategy for the SASOL LIBRARY, implemented from 2012 onwards. The most challenging in this regard, is to understand the domino effect that comes into play when spaces are re-arranged to make way for more effective use. Post-occupation surveys in this regard, have shown that many of the existing functions may be able to be differently arranged to be more effective for both students and library staff. Worldwide the model of collaborative spaces proves to be an innovative way of understanding the use of the library as an adaptive environment, ensuring open ended functionability ensuring vibrancy towards fostering critical thinking through intellectual and collaborative engagement.

AFRO MONTANE RESEARCH CENTRE

NEW SOUTH CAMPUS LECTURE HALLS

Location: University of the Free State SOUTH CAMPUS. Bloemfontein
Project value: R25 M
Completion date: 2017

The shift of the extended programmes and dramatic increase in student numbers
enrolling to the South Campus programs created the need for additional
classrooms.
Access against the steep site outcrop from existing pedestrian routes from the
lower campus resulted in design concepts which mainly investigated building
blocks that progressively staggered up the hill to accommodate lecture halls
positioned on top of each other. In this way the steepness of the site is negotiated
in such a way that access is provided to the upper campus.
The final design addresses existing views and provides lecture halls on three
levels, reached by a stairway and a mechanical lift which ultimately provides
access to a ramp that acts as a bridge to connect with upper level of the
campus.

ADDITIONS TO EXISTING PHYSICS DEPARTMENT

Location: University of the Free State. Bloemfontein
Project value: R35 M
Completion date: 2017

Covered in the fractured light-coloured spectrum, the new addition to the existing
Physics Department addresses growing interest in the sciences faculty of
UFS.
The main objective was to provide a 450-seat cinema style auditorium which
can be separated into three detached lecture venues. This enable staff to have
large gatherings to address the various student numbers per year group.
The circulation atrium provides access to each venue on different levels, culminating
in staff offices on the fourth floor and are naturally lit by large triangular
roof lights which allows natural sunlight to penetrate low down into the building.
